Criterion Mobile Closet Lincoln Park Event

LINCOLN PARK, Chicago — Film enthusiasts will have a unique opportunity this weekend as the Criterion Mobile Closet makes its debut in Lincoln Park. From Friday to Sunday, cinephiles can visit the mobile version of the famed Criterion Closet, which houses a collection of classic films on Blu-ray.

The Criterion Mobile Closet, a partnership with the Chicago International Film Festival, is located at NEWCITY Lincoln Park, 1457 N. Halsted St. This marks the first time the traveling version of the beloved store has come to Chicago.

Vivian Teng, the managing director of the Chicago International Film Festival, highlighted the importance of the event, saying, “We love curation. Just like how we consider ourselves curators of international independent film, Criterion shares that same philosophy.”

Criterion was founded in 1984 to preserve and celebrate classic cinema, starting with restored editions of films like “Citizen Kane” and “King Kong.” Over the years, it has expanded its catalog to include more than 1,700 titles. The Closet itself became a cultural phenomenon through its “Closet Picks” video series.

Fans have lined up for hours at previous stops in cities like New York and Los Angeles, eager to spend a few moments in film heaven. This weekend, visitors will have three minutes inside the mobile closet, surrounded by numerous Blu-ray titles, without needing reservations.

“You’re strangers in line, but you’re all united by this love of film,” Teng explained. “People end up finding their people, talking about favorite directors, swapping recommendations.”

Upon entering, guests will receive a tote bag and pocket guide. They can purchase up to three titles at a discount of 40 percent afterward. Teng’s advice for visitors? “Have a strategy before going in the closet, and wear comfortable shoes.”

The Chicago International Film Festival is currently underway, showcasing hundreds of films and various panels until October 26. Teng believes collaborations like the Criterion Mobile Closet reinforce Chicago’s vibrant film community. “We are connected — united by a love of cinema and what you’re about to see,” she said.
