HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — As ‘Sinners’ gains recognition for becoming one of the decade’s top-rated films, its lead actress, Wunmi Mosaku, reflects on the project’s profound impact. Released in April 2025, the vampire horror-thriller directed by Ryan Coogler debuted to an impressive $48 million, setting a record for original films in the 2020s.

The narrative is set in the Mississippi Delta in 1932, following characters Stack, Smoke, and Sammie Moore as they pursue freedom while navigating their ambitions that affect their community. Mosaku plays Annie, a Hoodoo practitioner and estranged wife of Smoke, played by Michael B. Jordan. Their backstory includes the loss of a daughter seven years prior, serving as a powerful emotional anchor throughout the film.

After returning from World War I, Stack and Smoke arrive in town with grand ambitions, intending to open a juke joint. The reunion between Annie and Smoke represents a critical emotional moment in the film, and Mosaku’s chemistry with Jordan during auditions solidified her role. “I just felt how powerful and magical everything was from the first scene,” Mosaku shared.

A striking scene features Sammie performing a heartfelt song, blending elements of the past and future in a unique musical montage, a concept added shortly before filming. Mosaku expressed her surprise and excitement at the creative decision, calling it a testament to Coogler’s genius.

On set, Mosaku’s daughter witnessed the vibrant array of characters representing various cultural heritages. “I thought it would be powerful for her to see this,” she said. While the original script lacked certain elements, the updated version brought forth an anachronistic celebration that captivated both the cast and audience alike.

“I wanted to treat Hoodoo with respect,” Mosaku explained, as Annie’s identity is deeply rooted in traditional spirituality. Research into Hoodoo practices influenced her portrayal of a character “whose power lies in love.”

The thematic depth of ‘Sinners’ attracts critical acclaim, with thoughtful performances that blend humanity with supernatural elements. As we await future cinematic adventures from Coogler, ‘Sinners’ stands out as a shining example of creative storytelling.

‘Sinners’ is now being shown in theaters nationwide, captivating audiences with its innovative approach and emotional resonance.
