Dali Mpofu Criticizes IEC’s Decision on Jacob Zuma’s Candidacy Appeal
Former president Jacob Zuma‘s legal representative, Dali Mpofu, has strongly criticized the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) for its decision regarding Zuma’s candidacy appeal for the National Assembly. Mpofu expressed his discontent, stating that the IEC lacks the authority to determine National Assembly membership.
The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party is currently in the process of appealing against the IEC’s ruling that barred Zuma from being listed as one of its parliamentary candidates post the upcoming national and provincial elections on May 29. The appeal is set to be heard in the electoral court in Johannesburg.
Mpofu likened the IEC’s stance towards Zuma to oppressive regimes, suggesting that it mirrors the actions of the apartheid government in suppressing political rights. The legal battle between Zuma’s camp and the IEC adds a new layer of complexity to the upcoming elections.
