Dallas Cowboys Defensive Coordinator Likely to Return Next Season
ARLINGTON, Texas — The future of Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus looks promising as the team makes personnel changes poised to bolster its defense. With eight games remaining in the season, the Cowboys are expected to give Eberflus an opportunity to address ongoing issues.
The Cowboys’ front office took significant steps by trading for Quinnen Williams, ranked among the top five defensive tackles in the NFL, along with veteran linebacker Logan Wilson. These acquisitions suggest that the franchise is planning for future success, possibly as far ahead as 2026.
Owner Jerry Jones has expressed confidence in Eberflus’s abilities, commenting on the need for stability within the coaching staff. “I’ve errored over the last three years with the changing of defensive coordinators or defensive philosophies,” Jones said. “Continuity, I know better.”
The Cowboys have cycled through three defensive coordinators in as many years, leading to challenges in consistency and performance on the field. The team has struggled with a mix of personnel that does not always fit a new coach’s system.
Eberflus’s decisions have come under scrutiny, such as his use of players like Donovan Wilson and the timing of introducing new starters Donovan Ezeiruaku and Jadeveon Clowney. The mix of players Eberflus has been required to manage includes some who may not align well with the team’s system.
Despite these challenges, the latest trades indicate a belief in Eberflus’s potential to create a more effective defense, reinforcing expectations around his return for the next season.
