Danny Boyle Teases Trilogy at CinemaCon with 28 Years Later Trailer

LAS VEGAS, March 31, 2025 — Director Danny Boyle took the stage at CinemaCon on Monday, unveiling the much-anticipated trailer for “28 Years Later,” a continuation of the zombie film saga that began with the critically acclaimed “28 Days Later.” The event provided fans with a thrilling glimpse into the upcoming sequel, set to deepen the franchise’s narrative roots.
During his presentation, Boyle humorously remarked on his enduring affection for apocalyptic tales and the undead since the release of the original film in 2002. “I still love an apocalypse, British-style,” he stated. The director further hinted that fans might need to be patient for the return of original star Cillian Murphy, saying, “Like all good things in life, you may have to wait a little while for him to make his appearance.”
Joining Boyle on stage was Nia DaCosta, who directed the upcoming sequel “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.” DaCosta emphasized the film’s unique approach, stating, “While it’s very much informed by ’28 Days Later’, the script for ‘The Bone Temple’ is very different. I was able to let my freak flag fly.”
Despite the excitement surrounding the projects, Boyle revealed that financing for the planned third installment of the trilogy has not yet been secured. He encouraged fans to support the first two films to help secure future development. Murphy is set to executive produce alongside Boyle and Alex Garland, who wrote the script for the new film and is known for his work on the original feature.
In 2024, Murphy won an Oscar for his role in “Oppenheimer” and is expected to bring further star power to the sequel, which stars Ana de Armas, Jessie Buckley, and Abraham Attah. Producer Andrew Macdonald and others are also involved in bringing the film to fruition.
The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that the long-debated follow-up landed at Sony Pictures, with Garland penning scripts for a planned trilogy. The sequel is set to be released on January 16, 2026, while Boyle has expressed interest in directing the third film if it comes to fruition.
“28 Days Later” followed Murphy as a coma patient who awakens to find a world overrun by the undead. The film grossed over $80 million worldwide and was followed by the 2007 sequel “28 Weeks Later,” which Boyle and Garland produced. CinemaCon, which runs from March 31 to April 3, serves as a key annual gathering for exhibitors and Hollywood studios.
