Daredevil: Born Again Premiere Unravels Past, Introduces New Challenges

NEW YORK, March 4, 2025 — The highly anticipated series ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ premiered on Disney+ last night, reigniting discussions among fans about its continuity with the previous Netflix series. The two-episode launch marks a significant return for Matt Murdock, portrayed by Charlie Cox, and his companions, who face new trials while navigating familiar themes of justice and morality.
As the series kicks off, Karen Page, played by Deborah Ann Woll, humorously pokes fun at Murdock and Foggy Nelson, portrayed by Elden Henson, for their nostalgia over Hell’s Kitchen’s pre-gentrification days. Despite the lighthearted banter, the tone quickly shifts in the first episode when Murdock’s life takes a dark turn following a tragedy.
The narrative reintroduces key characters and blends elements of the past with new storylines, creating an atmosphere of both reverence and anticipation. “It should be and it is always the same character,” Cox stated, addressing concerns about Murdock’s evolution since his Netflix debut. “The difference is… we morph and change based on what’s going on in our lives,” he explained during a recent interview.
‘Born Again’ promises fans a raw portrayal akin to its Netflix predecessor while exploring Murdock’s shift from vigilante to a more law-abiding citizen now practicing law with new partner Kirsten McDuffie, played by Nikki M. James. However, the series struggles to maintain balance between its darker elements and lighter moments. Critics have noted that while the violence harkens back to previous seasons, the character depth may not be as rich.
Throughout its inaugural episodes, Murdock faces a moral crossroads involving a case with Hector Ayala, a vigilante known as White Tiger. “This show aims to bridge the gap between Daredevil Season 3 and a new narrative direction,” said executive producer Brad Winderbaum. “Fans will see him take on cases that reflect his internal struggles.”
While viewers may appreciate the strong chemistry exhibited by returning cast members like Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, their arcs may seem lighter than expected. “It’s comforting to see Daredevil kicking ass again, but the epic hallway fights that defined Daredevil in the Netflix era are noticeably absent,” a critic noted.
The approach of combining old and new storytelling methods can feel uneven, as evidenced by the behind-the-scenes changes mid-production. Writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman were replaced and the season was ultimately crafted under the direction of Dario Scardapane. Despite these challenges, the series manages to evoke nostalgia while laying the groundwork for a fresh narrative.
In a move that mirrors real-world political dynamics, Fisk is depicted as running for mayor of New York City, offering subtle commentary on contemporary issues. “His massive fists clenched, he spews nonsense about law and order,” highlighted a reviewer, paralleling fictional political maneuvers with those of current leaders.
As the first two episodes of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ are now available on Disney+, fans eagerly await subsequent episodes, reflecting on how the series will evolve amid its inherent tension between past legacy and fresh beginnings.
