Dave Franco Sundance Festival 2025 Interview

PARK CITY, Utah — Actor Dave Franco responded to comparisons between himself and alleged CEO killer Luigi Mangione during an appearance at the Sundance Film Festival over the weekend. Franco, known for his roles in films like “The Rental” and the “Now You See Me” franchise, addressed the viral social media buzz about their resemblance.

“I’ve never received more texts in my life about anything,” Franco said during an interview. “Anyone who has my phone number has reached out about it.” The actor was referring to the widespread speculation that he could portray Mangione in a potential film adaptation of the high-profile case.

Mangione, who is currently awaiting trial, is accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024. Thompson was gunned down outside a New York City hotel while walking to an investor conference. Mangione was arrested days later at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where investigators found a gun matching the one used in the crime. His fingerprints were also discovered on a water bottle and snack bar wrapper at the scene.

While no scripted films about the case are currently in development, several documentary projects are underway, including one by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney. Franco’s wife, actress Alison Brie, joked about the resemblance but noted that no official offers had been made. “I don’t think he’s gotten any official offers,” Brie said with a laugh.

The case has captivated public attention, with Mangione’s alleged motives tied to frustrations with the American healthcare system. Social media users have drawn parallels between the real-life drama and a true crime novel, complete with a police chase, bags of Monopoly money, and a manifesto found on Mangione at the time of his arrest.

Comedian Matt Buechele quipped about an FBI poster of Mangione, saying, “‘Y’all, look for a low-key gorgeous assassin walking around the city.’ It’s like, you know how many gorgeous men there are in Manhattan? I’m supposed to just find him?”

Psychotherapist Dr. Jane Smith, author of “The Psychology of Celebrity Obsession,” explained the phenomenon of society’s fascination with embattled male figures. “It could be about the power of that person,” she said. “It could be that there’s a danger to it. Sometimes there’s no explanation for it. This is just what somebody’s attracted to.”

As the case continues to unfold, the internet has already cast its vote for who should play Mangione in a potential biopic: Dave Franco.
