David Blaine’s New Series Explores Fearful Illusions in Southeast Asia

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — David Blaine’s latest endeavor, “David Blaine: Do Not Attempt,” is set to debut on March 23, featuring a unique blend of fear and magic through a series of harrowing illusions.
During a Q&A following a screening of the Southeast Asia episode at the Linwood Dunn Theater, host and executive producer Blaine shared insights into the production process. Joined by executive producer Toby Oppenheimer, co-executive producer Abigail Harper, and moderator Debra Birnbaum, the team reflected on their intense journey of creating this ambitious series.
The episode features the intricate relationship between fear and magic, showcasing stunts that include interactions with king cobras, scorpions, and bees. Birnbaum asked the audience, “How’s everyone doing? Are we OK?” as the group processed the intense visual stimuli they had just witnessed.
Blaine explained that his passion for magic began in childhood, inspired by legendary magician Harry Houdini. “Growing up as a kid in Brooklyn that was obsessed with Harry Houdini, I liked what he was doing because he was combining real feats with magic,” he said. He later read Ricky Jay‘s book, “Learned Pigs & Fireproof Women,” which fueled his obsession with real magic.
Director Matthew Akers proposed focusing on the origin of illusions as a foundation for the series, leading the team to seek out extraordinary acts from around the world. “We should show the people that do these incredible things, and show the process,” Blaine remarked. This vision came to life as the team traveled extensively to uncover remarkable talents.
Blaine emphasized the collaborative effort behind the project, stating, “This was three years of our lives, and I can tell you that the team were just as invested as every single person that you see up on the screen. It was a pretty intense and incredible experience that I’ll never forget.”
Oppenheimer echoed this sentiment, humorously revealing that he was “scared by everything,” yet described working with Blaine as a “dream come true.” He added, “It might shock you, but he’s not a normal humanoid.” His team had to adapt to Blaine’s unique perspective as they researched risky and extraordinary performers worldwide.
Ultimately, the casting process proved pivotal. Blaine turned down many initial suggestions, insisting that the featured individuals should evoke discomfort among viewers. The Southeast Asia episode includes mind-bending performances, such as individuals who wear bees as clothing, eat razor blades, and even kiss king cobras.
Harper disclosed that the team navigated extensive discussions with legal departments about the safety of various dangerous acts. “David does these incredible stunts, but he’s also very aware of risk,” she noted. “Everything is calculated… Nothing is reckless.”
As excitement builds for the series, viewers can anticipate a blend of thrill and wonder as Blaine confronts the extremes of the human experience.
