David Lee Sporting Kansas City Appointment

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) – Sporting Kansas City announced today that David Lee has been appointed as the club’s President of Soccer Operations and General Manager on a seven-year contract through 2032.

Lee will serve as the chief soccer officer, overseeing first-team roster management, player recruitment, scouting, analytics, and technical staff. He will also guide the development of Sporting KC II and the Sporting KC Academy and report directly to the ownership group.

“As we enter a new era for Sporting Kansas City, this is the most important decision we could make,” said Co-Principal Owner Michael Illig. “After a six-month global search, David was the clear and undeniable choice. With his leadership, we are committed to building a team that reflects the pride of our community.”

In his new role, Lee aims to capitalize on the club’s proud history and passionate fanbase. “I look forward to building on the strong foundation established in this great soccer city,” Lee said.

Before joining Sporting KC, Lee was the Sporting Director at New York City FC, where he served since the club’s inception in 2014. During his time, NYCFC won the 2021 MLS Cup and the 2022 Campeones Cup, showcasing his leadership in player development and scouting.

Lee also played a key role in signing 14 of NYCFC’s 17 Homegrown Players. His extensive experience in Major League Soccer includes roles at the New York Red Bulls, where he began his career.

Sports analysts believe his appointment comes at a crucial time for Sporting KC, as the club navigates a transitional season following the departure of long-time head coach Peter Vermes.

“I am excited to work with the players, coaches and staff to achieve our shared ambitions,” Lee added.

The appointment is seen as a bold move to revitalize Sporting KC, which has struggled this season, currently sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference with two regular-season matches remaining.
