David Serero to Premiere “I, MUHAMMAD ALI” in December 2024
Acclaimed director and producer David Serero is set to bring the legendary life of Muhammad Ali to the Off-Broadway stage with his new one-man play, “I, MUHAMMAD ALI.” This anticipated production will explore the iconic boxer’s life, struggles, and triumphs, delving into his journey from Cassius Clay to becoming a globally recognized symbol of resilience, activism, and the champion of champions.
David Serero, known for his bold storytelling and transformative performances, embodies the complex character of Ali in this theatrical portrayal. The play blends elements of drama, history, and intimate reflection to capture the essence of the boxer’s persona. “I wish to treat Ali as a Shakespearean character. He has everything that Shakespeare would love. He rose to fame, fell, then stood up again and fought against many, including himself,” said Serero.
The production focuses on critical moments from Ali’s career, his battles both inside and outside the ring, as well as the personal sacrifices he made in his fight for justice, equality, and peace. After evaluating nearly 1,000 actor submissions, Serero has cast Zack Bazile in the role of Ali. “An opportunity like this, honoring the legend Muhammad Ali, The Greatest of All Time, is something not to take lightly,” commented Bazile. “I am very excited and grateful for the trust director David Serero has placed in me to portray Ali in this one-man play.”
Following its stage debut, “I, MUHAMMAD ALI” will transition to the screen, with a film adaptation planned for release in 2026. This adaptation, also directed and produced by Serero, aims to preserve the intimacy of the live performance while reaching a broader audience. Through these projects, Serero intends to honor Ali’s enduring legacy.
The play “I, MUHAMMAD ALI” is scheduled to premiere Off-Broadway in December 2024 at the AMT Theater located at 354 West 45th Street. Performances are slated for December 14th, 16th, and 18th at 7 PM, and on the 20th at 3 PM. Tickets are available through various outlets, ensuring accessibility for theatergoers eager to witness this compelling tribute to one of boxing’s greatest figures.
