Deion Sanders Reports Possible Return of Blood Clots After Loss

FORT WORTH, Texas — Deion Sanders, head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, revealed troubling news following a 35-21 loss to TCU on Saturday night. The 58-year-old coach said he may have more blood clots in his leg, stating, “Cat’s out of the bag, all right. I think I’ve got more blood clots.” Sanders expressed his pain, adding, “I’m not getting blood to my leg. That’s why my leg is throbbing.” A doctor’s appointment is scheduled for Monday to address the issue.
During the game, Sanders was seen sitting at times and coaching with only one shoe on his left foot. He has faced health complications in the past, including having two toes amputated in 2021 due to blood clots while coaching at Jackson State. After a summer of medical procedures, Sanders was told he was cured of bladder cancer, but his health continues to present challenges.
Sanders underwent 14 surgeries, one of which involved reconstructing his bladder with a section of his intestine. He expressed gratitude for his medical team, highlighting the importance of regular health checks. “The process wasn’t easy,” Sanders said. “… Make sure you go to get the right care.”
To aid in managing his condition during games, Sanders has had a portable bathroom installed on the Buffaloes’ sideline, sponsored by Depend, a company for adult diapers. This arrangement allows him to address his needs without leaving the field.
Despite his health challenges, Sanders continued to lead the Buffaloes throughout the game, albeit in discomfort. The team’s next matchup is scheduled for October 11 at home, where it remains uncertain if he will require additional support or if he will adjust his coaching methods. Sanders has indicated he is committed to coaching from the sidelines unless indicated otherwise.
