Delhi Faces Severe Heatwave Conditions with IMD Issuing Red Alert
Delhi is currently battling intense heatwave conditions as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised a ‘red’ alert for the national capital. This heightened alert signifies extreme weather conditions posing serious health risks, especially for vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and those with chronic illnesses.
Over the weekend, several areas in Delhi experienced scorching temperatures, with Northwest Delhi’s Mungeshpur recording the highest maximum temperature of 46.8 degrees Celsius, closely followed by Southwest Delhi’s Najafgarh hitting 46.7 degrees Celsius. The Ridge in North Delhi registered 45.5 degrees Celsius, while Aya Nagar and Pitampura recorded 45.2 and 46.1 degrees Celsius, respectively. At the central Safdarjung weather station, temperatures soared to 43.7 degrees Celsius, three degrees above the normal range.
The IMD warns that heatwave conditions are expected to persist on Sunday, with Safdarjung likely to witness a peak temperature of 44 degrees Celsius. Additionally, orange alerts have been issued for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, indicating a need for caution and preparedness as temperatures are forecasted to hover around 44-45 degrees Celsius during these days.
The intense heatwave gripping Delhi has raised concerns about the health and well-being of residents, prompting authorities to advise staying indoors, keeping hydrated, and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun. The IMD’s proactive measures aim to mitigate the risks associated with such extreme weather conditions and ensure public safety.
