Denis Villeneuve, acclaimed filmmaker behind the cinematic adaptation of Frank Herbert‘s “Dune,” announced his return to direct the franchise’s next installment, “Dune: Messiah.” Speaking with journalist Baz Bamigboye, Villeneuve confirmed that filming is set to commence in 2026. “I’m in the writing zone right now,” Villeneuve stated, hinting at his current focus on crafting the screenplay for “Dune: Messiah.”

The Canadian-French director described “Dune: Part One” and “Part Two” as a singular entity. “For me, it’s a movie made in two parts. It’s finished, it’s done,” he expressed. However, he acknowledged the need to expand the narrative following the example of Herbert’s “Dune: Messiah.” The story will continue approximately 12 years after the events of “Part Two,” with Timothée Chalamet reprising his role as Paul Atreides alongside Zendaya, Florence Pugh, and Anya Taylor-Joy.

Villeneuve emphasized that “Dune: Messiah” will conclude Paul Atreides’ story arc but also marks the end of Villeneuve’s involvement with the “Dune” universe, despite Herbert’s original series continuing beyond “Messiah.” He remarked, “The journey, their story is different this time, and that’s why I always say that while it’s the same world, it’s a new film with new circumstances.”

On the subject of the film’s release date, Villeneuve noted that production timelines often fluctuate, due in part to the complex nature of filmmaking. “These movies take a lot of time to be made, so it’s best not to say out loud when I might shoot.” Nevertheless, Warner Bros. has tentatively scheduled an untitled Villeneuve film, presumed to be “Dune 3,” for December 18, 2026, ultimately suggesting a 2027 release due to cast scheduling conflicts.

Villeneuve sees “Dune: Messiah” as a narrative departure from its predecessors, potentially presenting a more challenging storyline less reliant on action. The narrative will explore Paul Atreides’ transformation into a powerful yet potentially less sympathetic leader, which Villeneuve suggests will necessitate a unique cinematic approach.

The director also highlighted the significant role of collaboration and world-building in crafting “Dune,” crediting production designer Patrice Vermette for helping create the immersive settings essential to the series. “World-building is fun,” he commented, stressing the importance of visual storytelling and the creative partnerships required to manage large-scale productions involving thousands of collaborators.
