Denzel Washington’s ‘Othello’ Breaks Broadway Records with Star-Studded Cast

NEW YORK, March 24, 2025 — Denzel Washington expressed his excitement over the success of his Broadway play ‘Othello,’ which has become the highest-grossing play in history with a staggering $2.8 million earned in just one week. The adaptation of William Shakespeare‘s classic is being performed at the Barrymore Theatre, where tickets are priced as high as $900.
In an interview with CBS, Washington shared his enthusiasm, saying, “It’s the most excited I’ve been this century. Seriously. I haven’t been this excited about anything I’ve done as I am about this.” Joining him on stage is Academy Award-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal, whose performance has also garnered praise.
Washington discussed his view on acting, stating, “What’s the definition of a Hollywood actor? Myself, I’m from Mt. Vernon, so I’m a ‘Mt. Vernon actor.’ I don’t know what ‘Hollywood’ means.” He added, “I’m a stage actor who does film; it’s not the other way around. I did stage first. I learned how to act on stage, not on film. Theater is an actor’s medium. The curtain goes up, nobody can help you.”
The play’s director, Kenny Leon, commended Washington’s dedication, noting, “I think Denzel has given his whole self on the stage eight shows a week. He doesn’t have to do that other than he wants to impact lives — his Othello is going on that spiritual journey. It’s just a really special production.”
Jamie Lee Curtis, who attended the opening night, commented on Gyllenhaal’s performance, saying, “To know someone since they were five and watch them become an artist — to be able to watch Jake tonight take on one of the most challenging roles is just thrilling.”
Actress Rosie Perez also expressed her admiration, stating, “Just appreciative that I get to be a part of history. This is a historic evening. Break legs all over the place — it’s gonna be amazing.” The production is set in a near-future setting, contributing a contemporary twist to the classic tale.
As the lead character, military general Othello, Washington portrays the tragic figure grappling with jealousy and betrayal. Critics have noted that the stage adaptation successfully retains Shakespeare’s rich language while placing it in a modern context, allowing audiences to engage with the timeless themes of the play.
This remarkable production not only boasts a stellar cast but has also drawn notable press attention for its record-setting ticket sales, showcasing the enduring appeal of Shakespeare’s works in contemporary theater.
