Adam Devine Interview Podcast

Los Angeles, California — Actor Adam Devine opened up about his ongoing health struggles during a recent podcast episode, revealing that severe pain from a childhood accident is affecting his daily life. Devine, known for his roles in ‘Pitch Perfect‘ and ‘Workaholics,’ described the last three years as a “nightmare” due to injuries sustained when he was hit by a cement truck at age 11.

During the podcast, which aired Wednesday, Devine shared that he experiences debilitating spasms and pain that hinder his mobility. “It hurts to sit for too long, it hurts to stand for too long, and it hurts to walk for too long,” he said.

Despite undergoing 25 surgeries since the accident, Devine’s doctors have struggled to understand the cause of his recent health issues. He revealed that a doctor told him last year, “I was dying, literally,” which compounded his anxiety about his condition.

Devine recalled the day of the accident vividly. After leaving a store with friends, he misinterpreted a friend’s call to mean that it was safe to cross the street. This mistake led to him being struck by the truck, which he credits with saving his life as his bike absorbed the initial impact. “They say the reason I lived was the bike took the hit first,” he explained. “I still slid 500 feet. They picked me up under the first two wheels and then spit me out.”

Recently, doctors have been exploring the possibility that Devine suffers from Stiff-Person Syndrome (SPS), a rare autoimmune disorder marked by muscle stiffness and spasms. He mentioned that while death from SPS is uncommon, the average life expectancy for someone with the disorder is six years. This revelation came just before the birth of his son, Beau.

Devine sought a second opinion from a specialist who developed the term “stiff-person syndrome.” The specialist suggested that Devine’s symptoms are likely linked to his previous accident rather than a new health condition. However, he still referred to the spasms as “unexplainable.”

Additional context reveals that Devine believes physical activities he engaged in during the pandemic, such as cycling and CrossFit, may have exacerbated his health problems. “I think I just got so tight and so tightly wound, and my body has all these things that are a little wonky and a little wrong with it, that I just sort of snapped,” he said.

Despite these challenges, Devine is finding glimpses of hope. He reported that a recent stem cell treatment has left him feeling better than he has in three years. Devine currently stars as Kelvin Gemstone in HBO‘s ‘The Righteous Gemstones,’ which is airing its fourth and final season.

Looking ahead, Devine is optimistic about his future in the film industry. He expressed a desire to continue embracing comedy while navigating the challenges of physical roles. “I’m sort of trying to walk that line and see what I can do and what I can’t,” he remarked. Devine is also set to provide voice work for forthcoming animated films ‘Fixed’ and ‘Hypergalactic.’
