Mamma Mia! Cast Performance At Dexter High School

DEXTER, Mich. — The Dexter High School Drama Club brought the beloved musical Mamma Mia! to life on April 26, featuring the iconic music of ABBA. Directed by Erin Palmer LaVoy, the show captivated attendees at the high school’s Performing Arts Center.

This production, while not professional, was celebrated as one of the best high school performances ever seen by this reviewer. Palmer LaVoy, along with Music Director David Moan, Choreographer Amanda Webster, and Orchestra Pit Director Brian Rose, crafted a visually stunning and musically rich experience.

The show opened with a vibrant Act I, which set a high bar for the performance. Act II surpassed expectations with its raw energy, enthusiasm, and youthful spirit. Teen actors infused the production with a unique charm that distinguished it from adult performances.

Notable performers included 11th grader Echo Suino as Sophie, and 12th grader Kate Rossow as her mother, Donna. Rossow’s portrayal was particularly impressive, skillfully navigating the character’s emotional complexities and delivering powerful vocal performances.

The audience responded enthusiastically, applauding after every musical number. Sophie’s journey to discover her father’s identity contrasted humorously with Donna’s apprehensive relationship with her daughter, showcasing a range of themes from comedy to heartfelt moments.

Supporting roles added to the show’s success. 12th graders Ella Smith and Avery Meloche were standout performers as Tanya and Rosie, respectively, bringing laughter and charm to their scenes. Their performance of “Dancing Queen” was a crowd favorite.

Director Palmer LaVoy also emphasized inclusivity by incorporating members of the tech crew into the lively Act I number, “Voulez Vous.” This created a sense of community among the cast and crew.

The gentlemen of the cast, including Adam DeGregorio, Aidan Zeglis, and Cooper Thompson, brought humor and energy to their roles as Sophie’s potential fathers, effectively balancing the storyline. However, it was the female cast that truly shone throughout the performance.

Moan’s vocal direction enriched the musical experience, as singers offstage provided depth to solo performances. The combination of this technique with the performers’ talents led to an unforgettable auditory experience.

As the curtain closed, Palmer LaVoy ensured every cast member had their moment to shine during the bow. The evening concluded with MOan inviting the audience to leave their worries behind and enjoy the performance — a mission accomplished.
