Diaz Family Mexican Rodeo Extravaganza Denver 2025

The Diaz family, led by fourth-generation charro Gerardo “Jerry” Diaz, is celebrating the 30th anniversary of their Mexican Rodeo Extravaganza at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo. The event, which began on January 11, 2025, showcases a vibrant mix of Mexican-style bull riding, trick roping, mariachi music, and Portuguese-style bullfights, all choreographed by Jerry Diaz.

Jerry Diaz, a native of New Braunfels, Texas, continues the charrería traditions passed down from his great-grandfather over 150 years ago. Alongside his wife, Staci, and son, Nicolas, Jerry has produced some of the world’s largest Mexican rodeo shows. The family collaborates with local groups like Adelita de Colorado, Flor de Aguileña, and the Rough Stock Riders to bring the spectacle to life.

Charrería, recognized as Mexico’s national sport, originated in the 16th century when Spanish horses were introduced to the Americas. Indigenous laborers later transformed the practice into a uniquely Mexican tradition, incorporating artisanal craftsmanship into the iconic charro attire. Today, the sport thrives in the Southwest United States, with the Diaz family at its forefront.

The extravaganza also highlights the role of women in charrería through escaramuza, the only female equestrian event. Inspired by the adelitas, women fighters of the Mexican Revolution, performers ride sidesaddle in synchronized routines. Staci Diaz, who grew up in a rodeo family, emphasizes the deep bond between performers and their horses. “They become part of you; they become family,” she said.

Children also play a significant role in the event, performing on stick horses in colorful costumes that mirror those of seasoned charros. The Diaz family hopes the audience leaves with a lasting appreciation for the culture and history behind the performances. “I want them to feel as happy as we do while we’re out there performing for them,” Staci added.

The Diaz family’s dedication to preserving and sharing their heritage has made the Mexican Rodeo Extravaganza a beloved tradition in Denver, drawing fans from across the country to celebrate the artistry and history of charrería.
