BURBANK, Calif. — Disney is reportedly preparing to produce the next installment of its popular “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, with discussions suggesting that Johnny Depp may reprise his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow. Although specifics about the production timeline are not yet confirmed, sources indicate that Walt Disney Studios is quietly gearing up to begin filming.

The speculation surrounding Depp’s involvement has surged following his legal victory in a defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard, which had cast doubt on his future with Disney. Franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer previously stated that two scripts are in development for the upcoming film, one featuring Depp’s character and the other exploring a different narrative. In his remarks, Bruckheimer noted, “Nothing has been ruled out regarding Johnny’s return,” reaffirming that both storylines are being pursued.

While details remain sparse, rumors from The DisInsider suggest that production will commence at a Hollywood sound stage. However, the lack of additional verification has led the outlet to label the information as a “rumor,” urging caution among fans until official confirmation surfaces.

Depp, who first captivated audiences with his portrayal of Sparrow in the 2003 film “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” has been a pivotal figure in the franchise, which has grossed over $4.5 billion globally across five films. Despite past controversies, including his dismissal from Disney amidst claims of misconduct, there appears to be renewed interest from the studio in working with the actor once more.

In a December 2024 interview, Bruckheimer hinted at the potential for Depp’s return, stating, “We hope to get [both scripts] made, and I think Disney agrees they really want to make the Margot [Robbie] one too.” Robbie’s project is not intended as a spinoff but as a new narrative set within the same universe, further complicating the vision for the franchise’s future.

Despite initial plans for a sixth Pirates film being halted in the early 2020s, the ongoing public interest in the franchise suggests that Disney could be looking to innovate and reclaim its audience’s enthusiasm. While Depp has expressed a desire to conclude his character’s story arc, he has also maintained that he does not wish to return under the current circumstances.

Fans of the franchise are keeping a close eye on the developments, eager for a return to the swashbuckling adventures that defined the series. With the previous movie, “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” released in 2017 and receiving mixed reviews, there is a palpable sense of anticipation among viewers regarding what a new installment might bring.

With multiple projects being developed in parallel and the vast landscape of the franchise boasting numerous possibilities, fans can expect announcements from Disney in the coming months. The future of Captain Jack Sparrow may soon be decided.
