Disney’s ‘Snow White’ Theatrical Run Ends with Major Financial Loss

LOS ANGELES, CA — Disney’s live-action remake of “Snow White” officially ended its theatrical run on June 5, 2025, after failing to attract audiences and resulting in significant financial losses.
The film, which stars Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, debuted in theaters on March 21, 2025, following a troubled production marked by controversies, including criticisms from Zegler about Disney’s 1937 animated classic and issues surrounding the casting of little people as dwarfs.
The movie opened to disappointing ticket sales, grossing only $42.2 million domestically during its first weekend. With a production budget of $269.4 million, these earnings indicated a challenging financial outlook from the start.
In its second week, “Snow White” fell further behind, losing box office ground to Jason Statham’s film “A Working Man,” which earned $40 million. Over the course of its theatrical release, the film struggled to find its audience, ultimately closing with a domestic total of $87.2 million and an international total of $118.3 million, bringing the global box office to $205.5 million.
Considering production costs and marketing expenses — which included an estimated $111 million for global marketing and $29 million for residuals — industry analysts project Disney will incur losses of over $115 million from the film.
Notably, the film faced considerable backlash due to controversial casting choices and its CGI representation of the seven dwarfs, a decision that did not resonate well with fans. The negative sentiment surrounding the movie hindered its performance at the box office.
Despite this setback, Disney found solace in the success of its later release, the live-action “Lilo & Stitch,” which has grossed over $637 million globally since its debut on May 23, 2025.
Now that its theatrical run has concluded, “Snow White” will be available for streaming on Disney+ starting June 11, where the studio hopes it will find a wider audience.
