Disney’s Snow White Fails to Break Even at Box Office

Disney's Snow White Live Action Remake

LOS ANGELES, CA — Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White has struggled at the box office, earning only $200 million globally since its release. This figure is significantly lower than its production and marketing costs, leading to concerns about the viability of future live-action adaptations.

The film, which had a budget of around $200 million and a marketing spend of $70 million, needed to gross between $540 million and $675 million to reach the break-even point. However, it garnered just $42.2 million during its opening weekend in the United States, indicating a disappointing start.

Despite reaching over $200 million in total earnings, industry experts classify this outcome as a box office bomb. While other live-action remakes, such as The Lion King, have made over a billion dollars, Snow White falls short. The lack of profitability highlights Disney’s ongoing challenges with their remake strategy, underscoring that major spending does not guarantee box office success.

Analysts note that Snow White is not the worst performer among Disney’s recent remakes; that title likely goes to 2020’s Mulan, which made around $69.9 million. However, the pandemic’s impact on Mulan’s release provides some context for its performance.

In contrast, films like Christopher Robin, which had a lower budget of $75 million, managed to exceed expectations with slightly under $200 million in earnings. This disparity suggests that a more moderate approach to production budgets could yield better results for Disney moving forward.

As a result of Snow White’s underperformance, Disney may need to reevaluate its approach to future live-action remakes, potentially reducing budgets to increase profitability. The studio confirmed there are no current plans for a digital release of Snow White.
