District of Columbia 2024 Election Results: Live Updates and Key Races
The District of Columbia held its 2024 elections on November 5, with several key races and ballot initiatives on the agenda. For the presidential election, the District is expected to remain firmly in the Democratic column, as it has since gaining electoral votes through the 23rd Amendment in 1961. The consensus forecast indicates that the Democratic candidate will secure the District’s 3 electoral votes, continuing a trend that saw Joe Biden win 92% of the vote in 2020.
In the U.S. House of Representatives, Democrat Eleanor Holmes Norton, who has been the District’s Delegate since 1991, is anticipated to be reelected. Norton has held this position for over three decades and is widely expected to continue her tenure.
Locally, voters in the District of Columbia cast ballots for two at-large D.C. Council seats, as well as seats in Wards 2, 4, 7, and 8. Wards 2 and 4 saw incumbent council members running unopposed, while Wards 7 and 8 had contested fields. These local races are crucial for shaping the District’s legislative body.
A significant ballot initiative, Initiative 83, was also on the ballot. This proposal aims to switch the District’s primary elections from closed to semi-open primaries and to implement ranked-choice voting for all elections. This change would allow voters not registered with a political party to participate in primaries and introduce a new voting system designed to reflect broader voter preferences.
Results for these races and the ballot initiative are being updated live as they come in after polls closed at 8:00 PM Eastern Time on November 5.
