New Dementia-Inclusive Initiative Launched in Newfoundland and Labrador
The Provincial Government of Newfoundland and Labrador announced the launch of a new dementia-friendly communities and media campaign. This initiative aims to increase awareness, foster dementia-inclusive communities, and promote overall health and well-being within the province.
The Honourable John Hogan, KC, Minister of Health and Community Services, introduced the campaign. He is set to address the media on Monday, September 16, at 1:00 p.m. The event will take place at the Alzheimer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador located at Unit 107, 835 Topsail Road in Mount Pearl. Minister Hogan will be accompanied by Shirley Lucas, Chief Executive Officer of the Alzheimer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The initiative complements actions outlined in the Dementia Care Action Plan by promoting awareness and understanding of dementia. It also offers information on services and resources to support individuals and families living with dementia. This effort is supported by the Public Health Agency of Canada through the Dementia Strategic Fund and provincial funding under the Dementia Care Action Plan.
The 2024 budget includes an annual investment of $3.5 million to implement and support the campaign. This funding provides a coordinated approach to bringing about meaningful changes in the system, ensuring those living with dementia can continue to pursue life goals and derive meaning and enjoyment in their lives.
The plan follows recommendations from Health Accord NL, focusing on actions to build a more integrated care continuum that supports individuals in aging well in place.
Minister John Hogan stated, “Building communities that are more inclusive and dementia-friendly begins with increasing awareness and understanding of dementia. This approach helps reduce negative stigma and improve access to resources and support for individuals living with dementia.”
Shirley Lucas commented, “The impact of dementia in our province is significant, and the Alzheimer Society is pleased to partner with the government to build dementia-friendly communities.” She emphasized the importance of the government’s commitment to the Dementia Care Action Plan and the benefits of collaboration in raising dementia awareness.
