Djokovic Explains Absence at Nadal’s Controversial Farewell Ceremony
MALAGA, Spain — Tennis star Novak Djokovic has addressed his absence at Rafael Nadal‘s retirement ceremony during the 2024 Davis Cup finals, citing scheduling conflicts and Spain’s early elimination as key reasons. The ceremony, held in Nadal’s home country, has been widely criticized for its lackluster execution and notable absences.
Nadal, one of tennis’ greatest players, retired after Spain’s quarter-final exit at the Davis Cup. The farewell event, organized by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), was planned to take place after the semifinals, assuming Spain advanced. However, the team’s unexpected loss led to a rushed and poorly attended ceremony.
“I don’t know the exact details as to how they envisioned the ceremony, but I know that the plan was to do it after the semis, if Spain were to go through,” Djokovic said during a recent interview. “Andy Murray and I planned to be there, but we couldn’t fit the quarter-finals into our schedule. We were a sure thing for the semis. Unfortunately, it turned out the way it did.”
Djokovic, who has often competed against Nadal in high-stakes matches, expressed regret over missing the event. “I saw the video [of the ceremony],” he added. “I feel bad that I wasn’t there. Maybe Rafa didn’t want to make too much of a fuss about it to not disturb other teams or matches. I don’t know, to be honest.”
Carlos Moya, Nadal’s longtime coach, also voiced disappointment with the ceremony. “The feeling we are all left with is that the farewell was a bit scruffy and shabby,” Moya told Spanish radio station Ondacero. “Nadal is far above all this.”
Nadal, who retired with 22 Grand Slam titles and two Olympic gold medals, had hoped for a more fitting tribute to his illustrious career. The ceremony’s shortcomings have sparked discussions about organizing a more comprehensive farewell event in the future.
Djokovic’s absence was not the only notable one. None of the “Big Three”—Djokovic, Nadal, or Roger Federer—were present, nor were many other prominent figures from the tennis world. “It concerns me that two months later, no one has made a move to pay him a tribute that is worthy of Rafa,” Djokovic said. “If it happens, let’s hope I don’t miss it.”
