Police have launched an investigation following the tragic death of a man killed by his own XL bully dog in Accrington. The incident took place on Tuesday evening, prompting officers to respond to reports of a dog attacking someone inside a residence.

The victim, identified as 53-year-old David Daintree, was found deceased at his home on Ashley Court shortly before 9:30pm. Authorities confirmed that the breed involved in the incident is prohibited under current legislation.

In response to the ongoing threat posed by the dog, armed police officers were forced to shoot the animal in order to prevent further harm to additional individuals. The police expressed their condolences to Daintree’s family, highlighting the tragic nature of this incident.

Superintendent Marie Jackson of Lancashire Police stated, “This is a tragic incident which has sadly resulted in a man losing his life and my thoughts are with his loved ones at this time.”

Extra officers will be deployed in the area to conduct inquiries and address any concerns from the community. Jackson has urged anyone with information to come forward.

It is important to note that legislation prohibiting the ownership of an American XL bully dog has been in effect since February in England and Wales, with similar laws being enacted in Scotland and Northern Ireland. These regulations require owners to have their dogs neutered, microchipped, and muzzled in public spaces.
