Dollar General Store Closure Announcement

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Dollar General plans to close 96 of its stores and 45 Popshelf locations in early 2025, as the company embarks on a significant restructuring effort outlined in its fourth-quarter earnings report.

The closures represent less than one percent of Dollar General’s overall store base, according to CEO Todd Vasos. “As we look to build on the substantial progress we made on our Back to Basics work in fiscal 2024, we believe this review was appropriate to further strengthen the foundation of our business,” Vasos stated. He emphasized that these decisions are aimed at better positioning the retailer to serve its customers and communities.

The decision follows a comprehensive store portfolio optimization review that Dollar General initiated at the end of 2024. The evaluation focused on individual store performance, expected future outcomes, and current operating conditions, among other factors.

Currently, Dollar General operates more than 20,000 stores across the United States, including Dollar General, DG Market, DGX, and Popshelf locations in 48 states. The company has also focused on its Popshelf brand, which aims to provide customers with a fun and affordable shopping experience centered around seasonal and home decor items.

In 2021, Dollar General announced its plans to open about 1,000 Popshelf stores by the end of the fiscal year 2025, due to the brand’s increasing popularity. Following the closures, Popshelf will have approximately 175 stores remaining in operation, with an estimated 220 locations across 21 states prior to the announced store closures.

As of now, the specific locations of the stores that will close have not been publicly disclosed, with requests from USA TODAY for a list remaining unanswered. The closures will occur during the first quarter of 2025.

Dollar General operates 56 stores in Delaware, although there are currently no Popshelf stores in the state, with the nearest location situated in Salisbury, Maryland. The company is in the process of refining its location strategy to enhance profitability and customer satisfaction.
