Drew Lock Gains Confidence Ahead of Seahawks Preseason Opener

SEATTLE, Wash. — Seahawks quarterback Drew Lock looks a little different this year as he prepares for the upcoming preseason. After a year spent with the New York Giants, Lock has returned to Seattle, showing notable improvements in practice.
Lock spoke on Tuesday during an appearance on Seattle Sports‘ ‘Bump and Stacy,’ saying his experiences have influenced his approach to the game. “The older you get, the more reps you bang, the more football you’ve been around, the calmer you feel, the more confident you feel,” Lock explained. “I’ve seen this, I’ve done this. It just ends up making football a little easier.”
This time around, Lock isn’t in direct competition for the starter position against Geno Smith, but he aims to solidify his role as a reliable backup. His practice performance has shown an increase in throwing accuracy and on-the-run capabilities, which has pleased the Seahawks’ coaching staff.
Lock’s return also brings familiarity, as he throws to former teammates like Jake Bobo and Cody White, with whom he has established connections. “I know how they run routes. I’ve been in this style of offense before,” Lock said, referring to the wide zone scheme introduced by offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak.
Lock’s journey has not entirely been easy. During his tenure with the Giants, he found himself backing up Daniel Jones and later observed an unexpected shift where the team turned to Tommy DeVito instead of him. “The journey itself may not have been quite as fun,” he admitted. Nevertheless, Lock felt drawn back to Seattle, where he enjoyed his time and has a supportive environment.
“This is a special place for me,” he said. “I loved this organization for the two years I was here. Love the city… the trajectory of this team, bringing Sam in, it’s just an exciting time here.”
The Seahawks are set to start their preseason on Thursday night against the Las Vegas Raiders, a game that will showcase young talent and newcomers, as many starters are expected to sit out. Lock will likely not play extensively, but his performance in practices has set a hopeful tone for the season ahead.
