Drew Lock Seahawks Signing Announcement

RENTON, Wash. — The Seattle Seahawks have confirmed the signing of quarterback Drew Lock to a two-year, $5 million contract, marking his return to the team as a backup. The deal was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Friday, April 11, 2025.

Lock, 28, previously played for the Seahawks during the 2023 and 2024 seasons, primarily backing up Geno Smith. His earlier stint with Seattle followed a notable trade in 2022 that sent Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos, bringing Lock to the Pacific Northwest.

During his last season with the Giants, Lock started in five games, posting a record of 1-4 while completing 59.1% of his passes for 1,071 yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions. His most memorable performance was a victory against the Indianapolis Colts, where he threw for 309 yards and four touchdowns.

Lock’s return to Seattle raises questions about the future of Sam Howell, who joined the Seahawks from the Washington Commanders in March 2024. Howell, who is under contract for the 2025 season, struggled in limited action last season, including a disappointing showing against the Green Bay Packers where he completed just five of 14 passes.

The Seahawks have added Lock to their quarterback room as they navigate a transitional phase. They previously secured former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold on a lucrative three-year, $100.5 million contract. Both Lock and Howell are now competing for opportunities behind Darnold.

Lock’s familiarity with Seattle’s system may play a vital role in his effectiveness this season. Over his six-year NFL career, Lock has started 28 games, accumulated 6,354 passing yards, and thrown 34 touchdowns to 28 interceptions. His history with the Seahawks could help in providing a stable presence as the team aims for improvement.

“It’s an exciting opportunity to be back in Seattle,” Lock stated. “This is a place where I learned a lot during my previous time, and I’m eager to help the team succeed.”

As Seattle prepares for the upcoming draft, they are reportedly exploring new quarterback prospects, which adds another layer of complexity to their roster management decisions. NFL general manager John Schneider and coach Mike Macdonald have expressed that they are open to drafting a quarterback this year, indicating a strategy that may not hinge solely on Lock or Howell.

The pressing dynamics of the Seahawk’s quarterback situation will undoubtedly capture attention as training camp approaches. Lock’s return offers depth, but the competition within the squad is poised to intensify as they gear up for the challenges of the next season.

Lock’s return to Seattle, coming soon after the passing of his father, Andy Lock, a prominent Kansas City restaurant owner, holds emotional significance for the quarterback. In memory of his father, who had a close bond with Drew, the restaurant group founded by Andy closed for lunch the day of Drew’s signing. This poignant backdrop may inspire Lock as he re-enters the league amid personal loss.
