Duluth Mlk Day Celebration 2024

DULUTH, Minn. — The city of Duluth is honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a series of events under the theme “One People,” while its vibrant arts scene continues to thrive during the winter months.

The Duluth NAACP has organized a community worship service at Peace United Church of Christ on Sunday, Jan. 19, followed by a community breakfast at First United Methodist Church on Monday, Jan. 20. The day will culminate in a march to the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center (DECC), where Symphony Hall will host speakers and performers to inspire the community to carry on Dr. King’s work.

“The events are a reminder of the work still needed to achieve racial equality,” said a community member, reflecting on King’s dream.

Meanwhile, Duluth’s arts and entertainment scene is bustling. The Zeitgeist Zinema is showcasing the Golden Globe-winning animated film “Flow,” which has drawn attention for its unique storytelling. The film, an animal fantasy adventure with no dialogue, is playing through at least Thursday, Jan. 16.

Local musician Charlie Parr is also making waves with his latest album, “Little Sun,” set for release on March 22. Parr, known for his compelling guitar work, debuted new songs at Sacred Heart Music Center on Saturday, Mar. 5. The album was recorded in Portland, Ore., during a snowstorm, a fitting backdrop for the Duluth-based artist.

In Superior, Wis., the city is celebrating the 80th wedding anniversary of hometown hero Dick Bong and his wife, Marge. Time Arc Theatre is presenting “Sentimental Journey: 1945 Musical Revue,” featuring swing music by local jazzman Randy Lee and his band. The performance will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19.

The DECC’s Symphony Hall is also hosting a series of high-profile events. On Saturday, Jan. 18, a tribute to Johnny Cash’s iconic “At Folsom Prison” album will take place, described as a “full-contact immersive tribute drama.” The following Tuesday, Jan. 21, the touring production of the Broadway musical “Chicago” will kick off the inaugural season of Broadway at the DECC.

“From its daring choreography to its unforgettable characters, this show is a testament to the transformative power of theatre,” noted a blog about the production.

With events ranging from community celebrations to world-class performances, Duluth is proving to be a cultural hub even in the depths of winter.
