Dwayne Johnson Transforms for UFC Biopic ‘The Smashing Machine’

LOS ANGELES, CA — Dwayne Johnson showcases his transformative acting skills in the first trailer for “The Smashing Machine,” a biopic centered on former UFC heavyweight champion Mark Kerr. A24 released the trailer on Tuesday, generating excitement among fans and critics alike.
This marks the solo directing debut of Benny Safdie, one half of the acclaimed Safdie brothers known for films like ‘Uncut Gems’ and ‘Good Time.’ Johnson stars as Kerr, with Emily Blunt playing his girlfriend, Dawn Staples. The film also features Bas Rutten, Lyndsey Gavin, and Oleksandr Usyk.
Kerr, a prominent mixed martial artist from 1997 to 2009, won four ADCC World Championships during his career. He was famously the subject of an HBO documentary titled “The Smashing Machine,” focusing on his battles with substance abuse and tumultuous personal relationships.
In an earlier interview, Johnson expressed his desire to work with Safdie, saying, “Benny wants to create stories that are raw and real. I’m at a point in my career where I want to push myself and make films that explore humanity and struggle.”
The creative team behind the film includes Sabdie and Kerr as co-writers, while producers include Safdie, Johnson, Danny Garcia, Eli Bush, Hiram Garcia, and David Koplan. Tracey Landon serves as executive producer.
Set for release on October 3, “The Smashing Machine” is expected to make a significant impact during the fall festival season and could position Johnson for his first Academy Award nomination.
As the trailer reveals, the film follows Kerr’s journey through the world of UFC amidst a backdrop of addiction and personal challenges, showcasing his relationship with Staples through the highs and lows of his career.
