Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Transforms for Upcoming MMA Film ‘The Smashing Machine’
The highly anticipated film ‘The Smashing Machine‘ has officially entered production, featuring the iconic DWAYNE 'THE ROCK' Johnson in a transformative role as MMA legend Mark Kerr. The movie, directed by Benny Safdie and produced by A24, offers a unique glimpse into Kerr’s tumultuous life.
In the unveiled first look, Johnson is almost unrecognizable, donning facial prosthetics to embody the complex character of Mark Kerr. Kerr, a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion, rose to fame in both collegiate wrestling, earning a NCAA Division I title, and the MMA circuit, securing over two dozen championships.
‘The Smashing Machine’ marks a significant shift for director Benny Safdie, known for his collaborations with his brother Josh on indie hits such as ‘Good Time‘ and ‘Uncut Gems.’ Safdie’s solo feature debut promises a raw, authentic exploration of Kerr’s journey, highlighting the highs and lows of his career.
Joining Johnson in this cinematic endeavor is Emily Blunt, his ‘Jungle Cruise‘ co-star, who takes on the role of Dawn Staples, Kerr’s wife. Blunt’s involvement in the project was sparked by a phone call with Johnson, where she expressed her admiration for the documentary ‘The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr.’
Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions, along with Safdie’s Out for the Count banner, Eli Bush, and David Koplan, are at the helm of ‘The Smashing Machine,’ a film that promises to delve deep into themes of humanity, struggle, and authenticity.
While a release date for the movie has not been disclosed yet, fans are eager to witness Johnson’s powerful portrayal of Kerr and Safdie’s distinctive storytelling in this much-anticipated project.
