Earlston Bridge To Get Major Refurbishment

A new project is kicking off on August 19 to spruce up the A68 Earlston Bridge, which crosses over the Leader Water.

This important work, led by Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland, is set to last about five months, wrapping up around February 2025.

While the bridge will stay open for pedestrians during the work, drivers can expect some lane closures in the area south of Earlston town.

From August 24 to October 13, there won’t be any traffic management needed as the team will be working beneath the bridge instead.

However, there will be a need for some overnight closures of the A68 south of Earlston, and a diversion route will be provided. Details about these closures will be shared as soon as they are confirmed.

The team will set up a site compound in the layby south of the bridge, where Myra’s Snack Hut usually sits. Don’t worry, though—Myra’s Snack Hut has been temporarily moved about 400 meters further south and will continue to serve its customers as usual.

Dave Bishop, who manages the South East Unit Bridges for BEAR Scotland, explained, “The bearings on Earlston Bridge are nearing the end of their service life and need to be replaced.”

He added that although they’ve tried to plan the work to minimize disruptions, lane closures and some overnight road closures will still happen. The public will be kept in the loop regarding further details.

Consultations are underway with emergency services and other relevant parties to inform them about the upcoming works.
