During Monday’s practice at the Downtown Community Arena, Knoblauch and his coaching staff were seen trying out different forward combinations. They aim to establish three balanced scoring units for the team’s 82-game schedule. “Right now, we’re just trying to find out who can play well together; who’s kind of getting comfortable with each other,” Knoblauch said, indicating that lineups might vary nightly depending on team needs.

In an attempt to foster new dynamics, winger Jeff Skinner was placed alongside center Adam Henrique and winger Connor Brown on the third line. Meanwhile, Mattias Janmark was promoted to the Oilers’ second line alongside Leon Draisaitl and Viktor Arvidsson, providing an opportunity to showcase himself in an offensive role.

Coach Knoblauch commented on the changes, emphasizing the need for flexibility and balance across lines. “With Skinner, if he does play with Rico, it just gives us more balanced scoring on the three lines,” Knoblauch remarked, adding that such adjustments are part of finding the best possible combinations.

Leon Draisaitl, a key player for the Oilers, spoke to media after practice about the evolving team dynamics. He expressed enthusiasm regarding his budding connection with Viktor Arvidsson, noting the latter’s smart play and ability to find open spaces on the ice. While recognizing the importance of chemistry with his linemates, Draisaitl highlighted his role in elevating the performance of his teammates.

Despite closing out their preseason with a loss to the Vancouver Canucks, the Oilers continue to explore options. Knoblauch noted the potential for players like Corey Perry and Vasily Podkolzin to see increased playing time, reflecting the team’s strategy of adapting to their opponents.

Jeff Skinner, a recent acquisition who signed a one-year deal with the Oilers, might find himself starting the season lower in the lineup despite having been positioned on the top line during the preseason. Skinner, a veteran winger, was signed presumably to fill a top-six role, raising speculations about the Oilers’ approach moving forward.
