Eguavoen Urges Chukwueze to Improve and Adapt Ahead of AFCON Qualifiers
Nigerian footballer Samuel Chukwueze is facing challenges in securing a regular starting position with both his club, AC Milan, and the national team. Despite being Milan’s most expensive signing of the 2023 summer transfer window, the winger is struggling to make impactful starts due to a dip in form and competition from Christian Pulisic.
During a recent Serie A match against Fiorentina, Chukwueze was introduced as a substitute. While he managed to force a save with one of his shots, another attempt from an advantageous position ended up striking the corner flag. This inconsistency has raised concerns about his current performance level.
Super Eagles interim manager Augustine Eguavoen addressed Chukwueze’s current situation and offered advice on areas of improvement during a segment on NFF TV. Eguavoen, known for his preference for versatile players, stated, “I am a coach who likes players who can play in more than one position. If you can play in more than one position, you’re fine with me.” He added, “I don’t want rigid players, I want players who know how to express themselves.”
Eguavoen specifically highlighted the need for Chukwueze to make smart decisions, especially when it comes to dribbling. “We know how good he is when he has to dribble, but he should know where to dribble and where not to dribble,” said Eguavoen. Moreover, the coach emphasized the importance of Chukwueze fulfilling his defensive responsibilities, a critical aspect for his role within the team.
The Nigerian national team, known as the Super Eagles, is preparing for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Currently leading their group with four points after a victory over Benin and a draw against Rwanda, the team aims to strengthen their position in the forthcoming matches against Libya. Eguavoen’s strategy underscores the need for discipline and tactical awareness among players.
The first match against Libya will take place in Uyo on Friday, October 11, followed by a return game at the Martyrs of Benina Stadium in Benghazi on Tuesday, October 15. Eguavoen’s messages serve as a critical reminder to Chukwueze and his teammates of the attributes required to achieve success in their AFCON qualification campaign.
