Eintracht Frankfurt Faces Union Berlin in Bundesliga Matchup

FRANKFURT AM MAIN, Germany – Eintracht Frankfurt hosts 1. FC Union Berlin on Sunday at Deutsche Bank Park for a Bundesliga match at 15:30 CET. The match comes just three days after Frankfurt’s impressive 5-1 victory over Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League.
Coach Dino Toppmöller expressed pride in his team’s performance against Galatasaray. “Yesterday was a match that we needed for our development,” Toppmöller said. “The players exceeded their own expectations.” Twelve players made their Champions League debuts in that match, showcasing the team’s depth.
In the Bundesliga, Frankfurt is currently fifth with two wins and one loss from their first three matches. They won their opening game against SV Werder Bremen 4-1, followed by a 3-1 win against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. However, they faced a setback, losing 3-1 to Bayer 04 Leverkusen in their last league outing.
Toppmöller hinted at potential changes to the starting lineup for Sunday’s match. “We will see who will be in goal on Sunday,” he said, suggesting that goalkeeper Kauã Santos might start. The coach also confirmed that Mario Götze will miss the match due to thigh muscle issues.
Union Berlin, under coach Steffen Baumgart, has not had the best start this season, sitting in 14th place with just one win. They began their season with a surprising 2-1 victory against DFB-Pokal champions VfB Stuttgart but quickly fell to losses against Borussia Dortmund and TSG Hoffenheim.
Baumgart remains optimistic about his team’s chances against Frankfurt, noting their previous success at Deutsche Bank Park. Last season, Union Berlin managed a draw and a victory in their matches against Frankfurt.
Injury issues plague Union Berlin, with five players currently sidelined. However, several are expected to return soon. Baumgart stated, “Andras and Diogo have trained – we will make the decision tomorrow as to whether they will make the squad.”
The predicted lineups for both teams show Frankfurt set to play a 4-2-3-1 formation, while Union Berlin is anticipated to adopt a 3-4-2-1 setup. As both teams look to capitalize on their recent performances, fans await an exciting clash in Frankfurt.
