Elizabeth Olsen Shifts Focus to Indie Films After Marvel Success

LOS ANGELES, March 25, 2025 – Elizabeth Olsen is navigating a new chapter in her career, stepping away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to focus on independent films. After her role in the MCU’s ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ (2022), Olsen revealed her intention to prioritize projects that align with her artistic vision.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Olsen expressed the importance of diversifying her roles. “I didn’t realize this until about six years ago, but because Marvel and its influence takes up so much physical time and space in the world, it’s really important for me to make choices outside of Marvel that reflect my own taste,” she stated. This transition has been marked by her latest projects, including ‘His Three Daughters‘ and ‘The Assessment,’ which is currently in theaters.
‘The Assessment’ presents a dystopian future where parenthood is a privilege, challenging its characters in profound ways. Olsen portrays Mia, who, along with Himesh Patel’s Aaryan, undergoes a rigorous evaluation to determine their suitability for parenthood by a character played by Alicia Vikander. “The idea of caring for a child in a resource-scarce world raises important questions about choices and rights,” Olsen noted, reflecting on the film’s themes.
Olsen spoke candidly about her past experiences in the Marvel franchise, where she has portrayed Wanda Maximoff, also known as Scarlet Witch, in several films and Disney+ series, including the Emmy-winning ‘WandaVision‘ (2021). After debuting in the MCU in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘ (2014), she has dedicated much of her career to this franchise, participating in a total of nine productions.
Despite her success in the superhero genre, Olsen confirmed she will not return to the MCU for the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ and ‘Secret Wars‘ films, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo. These projects are set to begin filming soon in London, but Olsen hinted at her focus shifting towards new ventures, stating, “I’m moving on to filming a pilot for FX called ‘Seven Sisters.’”
Reflecting on her career path, Olsen expressed a newfound appreciation for independent filmmaking. “Your taste does create the artist that you are, and that wasn’t something I was thinking about when I first started working,” she said, emphasizing the importance of selecting projects that resonate with her personal interests and values. This philosophy is evident in her choice to work on ‘The Assessment,’ where the narrative’s complexities echo her own thoughts about motherhood and societal norms.
As Olsen embarks on this exciting new chapter, she is keen on balancing her past achievements with fresh opportunities that allow for artistic exploration. “The experiences I’ve gained in larger productions have shaped who I am, but I am eager to explore these smaller-scale films and the intimate communities they foster,” she concluded.
