Ellen DeGeneres Sells Montecito Home as Couple Settles in Cotswolds

MONTECITO, Calif. — Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, have officially sold their two-bedroom beach bungalow in Montecito, California, for $5.2 million, just ten days after listing it for $4.995 million. The sale comes as the couple adjusts to their new life in the English countryside after relocating to the Cotswolds in late 2024.
The 1,691-square-foot Spanish-style home features a chef-style kitchen with limestone countertops, two spa-like bathrooms, and expansive outdoor living areas including a private courtyard and a terrace. The couple initially purchased the property in 2021 for $2.9 million, making this their most recent gain in a series of real estate investments.
A representative from Riskin Partners Estate Group handled the transaction and reported receiving multiple offers within two days of the listing, indicating a highly competitive market.
DeGeneres, 67, and de Rossi, 52, made headlines last year as they began a new chapter in the quaint and picturesque Cotswolds region, noted for its scenic beauty and celebrity residents including the Beckhams and Jeremy Clarkson. The move followed a tumultuous period for DeGeneres that included a workplace controversy that drew widespread attention and criticism.
In a 2023 interview, DeGeneres described her real estate endeavors as a form of travel, stating, “I don’t really travel a lot. So, house flipping is my version of travel. With house flipping, the scenery changes though I stay in the same general area.” This latest sale reflects her ongoing passion for real estate, as she has bought and sold over 50 homes in her lifetime.
DeGeneres and de Rossi’s new English farmhouse reportedly cost $18 million, well above the initial asking price. Since their move, they have faced some challenges, including recent flooding around their new property and local complaints regarding renovations.
Despite these hurdles, DeGeneres has expressed her happiness in her new life overseas and shared a heartfelt message for de Rossi celebrating their 20-year relationship. “So happy we get to travel and explore the world together in the next 20 years,” DeGeneres tweeted.
The Montecito property’s sale signifies the couple’s definitive step away from their former life in the U.S. as they embrace their future in England.
