Elon Musk Eyes D.C.’s Line Hotel for Private Club Amid Trump Inauguration
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Tech billionaire Elon Musk is poised to become the highest bidder for Washington, D.C.’s trendy Line hotel, with plans to transform the 220-room property into an exclusive private social club, according to sources familiar with the deal. The auction for the historic Adams Morgan property, located at 1770 Euclid Street NW, is set for January 23, just days after President-elect Donald Trump‘s inauguration.
The Line hotel, housed in a neoclassical former church built in the early 1900s, has been a cultural hotspot since its 2017 opening. The property features acclaimed restaurants like Rake’s Progress by James Beard Award-winning chef Spike Gjerde and Erik Bruner-Yang’s Brothers and Sisters and Spoken English. The hotel’s pandemic-related financial struggles led to its foreclosure, with California-based lender Acore Capital and brokerage firm JLL managing the sale.
Musk, a key ally of Trump and the incoming head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), is no stranger to high-profile ventures. The CEO of SpaceX, Tesla, and X (formerly Twitter) is reportedly eyeing the Line as his next project. The property’s adaptive reuse by developer Sydell Group and its $86 million refinancing in 2019 make it a prime target for Musk’s ambitions.
The timing of the auction coincides with the opening of a competing private membership club near the White House, set to debut on January 31. Meanwhile, Musk’s presence at Trump’s pre-inauguration rally at Capital One Arena has fueled speculation about his growing influence in Washington.
Investor Affinius Capital, which holds a stake in the property, declined to comment on Musk’s potential acquisition. The auction will be held in front of a New York courthouse and broadcast live, with Musk expected to lead the bidding.
The Line’s sister properties in Austin, Los Angeles, and San Francisco have cemented its reputation as a luxury brand. However, the D.C. location’s future as a private club could mark a significant shift in its identity, potentially limiting public access to its historic and culinary offerings.
