Embracing Life And Death: Simon Boas' Inspirational Reflections

In a poignant reflection on life and acceptance, Simon Boas, a former aid worker and author from Jersey in the Channel Islands, shared his inspirational journey towards embracing his terminal cancer diagnosis. Boas, aged 46, revealed his thoughts on mortality and the profound impact of his experiences in regions such as the UN, Gaza Strip, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Ukraine.

Boas expressed how his exposure to death in various parts of the world had prepared him for his own terminal prognosis. Drawing on his time spent aiding vulnerable communities and serving as a Samaritan, he emphasized the importance of acknowledging death as an integral part of life, allowing individuals to cherish and prioritize meaningful moments.

With a deep sense of gratitude and acceptance, Boas highlighted the significance of fully experiencing life as a preparation for facing death. His forthcoming book, ‘A Beginner’s Guide to Dying’, serves as a testament to his journey and the wisdom he gained through his own reflections on mortality.

As Boas courageously confronted his limited time left, he expressed profound appreciation for the impact individuals can have on others, regardless of their societal status or accomplishments. Quoting from George Eliot’s ‘Middlemarch‘, he underlined the ripple effect of small acts of kindness and the enduring influence each person holds.

While Boas faced the loss of simple pleasures like indulging in melted cheese due to his medical condition, he found solace in moments spent with loved ones and the freedom to savor small joys like Muscadet and roll-up cigarettes. Despite physical limitations, his spirit remained undaunted.

Looking ahead to his final days in a hospice surrounded by family, Boas shared his curiosity and readiness to embrace the unknown. Quoting Julian of Norwich, he found comfort in the belief that ultimately, all shall be well. His unwavering optimism and profound insights serve as a poignant reminder of the beauty and resilience found in both life and death.
