Emilio Estevez Mighty Ducks 4 Script Announcement

NEW YORK, NY — Actor Emilio Estevez disclosed in a recent interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that he penned a script for a fourth “Mighty Ducks” film, but Disney expressed no intention to move forward with the project.

Estevez, who starred as coach Gordon Bombay in the original 1992 film, shared his thoughts about wanting to address the mishaps experienced during the production of the Disney+ series “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers.” This series aired for two seasons and concluded in 2022 after Estevez departed due to a contract dispute related to COVID-19 vaccination requirements.

“I also wrote ‘Mighty Ducks 4,'” Estevez said. “I wanted to make up for all of the disasters that happened on the ‘Game Changers’ series.” The script, Estevez explained, featured his character becoming re-involved in hockey through a new expansion women’s team, spurred on by characters played by Joshua Jackson and Kenan Thompson.

“So, it would be an all-girl team,” Estevez elaborated. “When we discover Bombay, he’s coaching roller derby, and he insists his girls have to have a shot. It was charming, contemporary, and cool.” Despite his enthusiasm, Estevez revealed that Disney’s response was dismissive: “We don’t want to pursue that,” the studio told him.

The series “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” received generally positive reviews, praised for its modern take and ability to subvert the original film’s premise while still keeping Gordon Bombay relevant. Estevez’s departure from the series stems from disagreements over vaccination protocols instituted by ABC Signature for its productions, which required that all actors and crew members in direct contact be vaccinated against COVID-19.

“Game Changers” was celebrated for its nostalgic return to the beloved franchise but faced challenges during production, which ultimately contributed to its conclusion after just two seasons. Estevez, who played a supporting role in this latest incarnation, saw his character’s passion for hockey rekindled as an assistant coach to a new underdog team.

Although Estevez excitedly explored the creative potential for a new film, he lamented that his vision will not come to fruition. The original “Mighty Ducks” was well-received and has a lasting legacy, leading fans of the franchise to hope for a revival. Estevez closed with optimism for the future of the franchise, noting, “There’s always a chance for more stories to be told.”
