Emily Atack Rivals Disney+

The highly anticipated Disney+ series ‘Rivals,’ based on Jilly Cooper‘s 1988 novel, has become a point of discussion due to its bold storytelling and daring performances, particularly by actress Emily Atack. Atack, 34, portrays Sarah Stratton, the wife of a Deputy Prime Minister, in the adaptation often referred to as a ‘bonkbuster’.

The series delves into the competitive atmosphere of independent television in the 1980s, focusing on the intense rivalry between Rupert Campbell-Black, played by Alex Hassell, and Lord Tony Baddingham, portrayed by David Tennant. Emily Atack’s character adds a layer of complexity as she engages in scenes that challenge traditional representations of women on screen.

Speaking to Sky News, Atack described the experience of filming nude scenes as ‘liberating,’ emphasizing the professionalism and comfort provided by an on-set intimacy coordinator. Atack remarked, ‘I’m a woman, of course people are going to spin a negative narrative on what you do. But stressing that I’m exactly where I need to be, I’m at work. I’m playing a role and I’m very comfortable.’

The series has garnered attention not only for its steamy scenes but also for bringing a contemporary lens to 1980s culture, exploring themes of class, race, sex, and power dynamics in British society. Early reviews have been favorable, with the series achieving an average rating of 93% on the Tomatometer.

Atack’s career has traced a path through roles that have often thrust her into the public eye, beginning with her portrayal of Charlotte ‘Big Jugs’ Hinchcliffe in ‘The Inbetweeners.’ Reflecting on her rise to fame, she shared, ‘I was a very vulnerable teenager with an air of naive confidence. It was life-changing, and the roles followed a similar vein for years.’

In ‘Rivals,’ a pivotal tennis scene has caught viewers’ attention, showcasing Atack and Hassell in the nude, which Atack insists is integral to the storyline. ‘We keep saying that the nudity and the sex scenes are a huge part of this, but there’s always a reason for them,’ Atack told Digital Spy.

Despite dealing with online harassment and criticism over her roles and public image, Atack stands firm in her belief that representation in media requires diverse portrayal. ‘You can’t win whatever you do. If you keep your clothes on, you’re a frigid nun; if you take your clothes off, you’re a tart,’ she stated to The Radio Times, underscoring a commitment to her craft.

Co-star Alex Hassell has supported Atack’s involvement in the series, noting their comfort and trust on set. The production team, including intimacy coordinators, was credited with creating a safe environment for all involved.

As ‘Rivals’ airs on Disney+, it is hailed for its raunchy yet insightful portrayal of ambition and privilege, promising audiences a ‘joyously mischievous rollercoaster ride’ through the excesses of the 1980s television industry.
