Emotional Night on ‘Dancing With the Stars’ as Soul Train Night Honored
During Monday’s Soul Train Night on “Dancing With the Stars,” the show’s judge Carrie Ann Inaba was moved to tears by Reginald VelJohnson‘s performance, with the “Family Matters” star capturing the hearts of the audience and the panel. Despite not scoring the highest points, VelJohnson received an outpouring of affection for his enthusiasm and spirit on the dance floor.
Judge Carrie Ann Inaba expressed her emotional response, noting, “I don’t know why this is making me so emotional. There’s something so sweet and innocent when you dance. I wish I could give you 10s and 10s for bringing us such joy.” Inaba’s sentiments were echoed by guest judge Rosie Perez, who remarked, “I just love you.”
Despite his stiff movements, which the actor has openly discussed as a challenge at 72, VelJohnson remains a favorite among viewers, which host Derek Hough emphasized by acknowledging the impact of audience votes. Hough remarked, “They’re rooting for you,” highlighting the crucial role of viewer support.
VelJohnson, along with his professional dance partner Emma Slater, performed a foxtrot to Johnny Nash‘s “I Can See Clearly Now,” and received a score of 21, marking the lowest score of the night. The judges’ scores remained consistent, each awarding either a five or six.
In addition to the emotional performances and judging, “Dancing With the Stars” featured Rosie Perez as a special guest judge. Known for her extensive history in dance from her early days on “Soul Train,” Perez brought a touch of nostalgia and excitement to the event. Social media was abuzz with comments about her appearance, with many praising her youthful look at 60 years old.
The night’s performances set the stage for a dramatic follow-up on Tuesday’s Hair Metal episode, which will see at least one elimination after combining scores from Monday and Tuesday nights. VelJohnson and Slater are preparing to deliver a cha cha to “I Wanna Rock” by Twisted Sister.
“Dancing With the Stars” airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC and Disney+, promising more enthralling performances and star-studded guest appearances, with the upcoming episode featuring Gene Simmons from the iconic rock band KISS as a special guest judge.
