After over four decades of captivating listeners with Celtic and folk music, NPR‘s iconic radio show, The Thistle & Shamrock®, is set to air its final episode on September 30. The show, created, produced, and hosted by Fiona Ritchie, first debuted back in June 1983 on American Public Radio before transitioning to NPR in September 1990.

Throughout its illustrious run, The Thistle & Shamrock® has been broadcast on a multitude of stations across the U.S., from WRKF in Baton Rouge to KUAC in Fairbanks, captivating audiences with enchanting musical journeys through Scotland and the American Appalachians. Ritchie, a stalwart in the world of radio broadcasting, has been the driving force behind the show, nurturing a dedicated following over the years.

When The Thistle & Shamrock® was first introduced on WFAE in Charlotte in 1981, it filled a void for Celtic and folk music enthusiasts in the U.S. The show’s unique blend of music from the U.K., Ireland, and North America garnered attention from small independent record labels, propelling it to become a pioneering force in the genre.

Over the years, Ritchie has used various mediums to engage listeners, from vinyl and reel-to-reel to digital formats like mp3. The show even made history by offering NPR’s first free mp3 download in 2003, showcasing its commitment to evolving with changing technology trends.

As Ritchie reflects on her journey with The Thistle & Shamrock®, she expresses gratitude for the ability to connect with a diverse audience through the universal language of music. The show’s impact has transcended borders, bringing together listeners from all walks of life, fostering a sense of empathy and understanding.

Looking ahead, Ritchie aims to explore new horizons and delve into other interests, potentially creating radio content that allows for more breathing space between productions. Her legacy with The Thistle & Shamrock® stands as a testament to the enduring power of music in bridging cultural divides and creating lasting connections.
