In a thrilling showdown at the Olympic women’s soccer tournament, Spain pulled off a stunning comeback to defeat Colombia 4-2 in a penalty shootout on Saturday.

Playing at the Stade de Lyon, Spain found itself in hot water early in the match as Colombia took a commanding 2-0 lead. Mayra Ramirez struck first, firing into the net just 12 minutes into the game, while Leicy Santos doubled the lead in the second half with a curling shot.

However, Spain wasn’t ready to pack their bags just yet. Jenni Hermoso ignited the team’s comeback with a goal in the 79th minute, giving Spain hope. Then, in a dramatic twist, defender Irene Paredes scored in the seventh minute of stoppage time, sending the game into extra time.

The penalty shootout became a nail-biter as Carolina Usme’s weak penalty was saved by Spain’s goalkeeper Cata Coll. Liana Salazar followed suit, sending her shot over the bar. Meanwhile, Spain confidently converted all four of their penalty kicks, with star player Aitana Bonmati sealing the victory with the final spot kick.

This match marked Spain’s first appearance in the Olympics, and they now look ahead to the semifinals, where they will face either France or Brazil. Last year, they made history by winning the Women’s World Cup, and it looks like they’re determined to keep their winning momentum going, despite the challenges thrown their way.
