Everton Aims for First Win at Anfield in 21st Century
Anfield, England – Everton hopes to break a long winless streak at Liverpool‘s Anfield this Saturday. Manager David Moyes has yet to win at this historic ground in 22 attempts, spanning various clubs throughout his career.
Everton’s last victory at Anfield came during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 under Carlo Ancelotti. Since then, they have struggled at this venue, continuing a pattern where their ambitions for success are regularly stifled.
This weekend, Everton faces a Liverpool team that is currently at the top of the Premier League and boasts a perfect start to the season. Liverpool also welcomes British record signing Alexander Isak for his top-flight debut, adding to the challenge for the visitors.
“Liverpool have shown at different times where they have been very good but other times when they have shown some vulnerability,” Moyes said. “We will have to try and take advantage of those moments. We played them last year at Anfield and lost to an offside goal, and we want to try and run them close again, and maybe this time things will go in our favor.”
Moyes has overseen 22 matches at Anfield, recording seven draws and 15 defeats. His record reflects the difficulties facing him when managing against the league’s biggest clubs. Notably, he has endured long stretches without wins against Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal as well.
This time might be different, however, as Everton enjoyed a productive summer with nine new signings at a record net spend of £97 million. Key players like Jack Grealish, who leads the Premier League in assists, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall are expected to make significant contributions.
<p“However, this Everton feels far removed from many of those sides that have gone before them,” said Mike Richards from The Unholy Trinity Everton podcast. “There’s a belief this Everton attack can ask questions of most, if not all, sides in the league.”
Everton has already shown attacking prowess this season, with competent performances against Brighton and Wolves, and they were unfortunate to draw against Aston Villa after squandering several opportunities. The Toffees have scored five league goals this season, mostly in the first 55 minutes.
In contrast, Liverpool has demonstrated signs of vulnerability this season, losing two-goal leads on three occasions. Their recent Champions League match showed similar defensive lapses, giving Everton hope they can exploit such moments.
<p“Defeat has so often felt inevitable after falling behind, but now that’s not the case,” Richards added. The derby matches between these teams tend to be tightly contested, and recent history suggests anything can happen.
As they prepare for the match, both teams recognize the stakes. An early goal could prove critical for Everton, and they must also withstand Liverpool’s late-game offensive pressure. With the support of determined fans and improved team dynamics, Moyes and Everton are hopeful they can break their winless streak at Anfield this time around.
