Exploring the Vibrant Atmosphere of the L.A. County Fair

Pomona, California – Last week, I attended the Los Angeles County Fair for the first time and found a lively celebration of community and culture. The fair was an experience packed with music, carnival games, and a diverse crowd that showcased the spirit of Southern California.
Former L.A. County Fair president Miguel Santana emphasized the significance of the fair’s audience. “It’s a sense of Americana and proof we can be diverse and American at the same time,” Santana said as I navigated my way to the Fairplex off the 10 Freeway.
The event drew me in not just for its fun, but for its enormity. Santana laughed when I compared it to the Orange County Fair, stating, “It’s enormous. You’re gonna get your 10,000 steps.” But, getting to the fair wasn’t without its challenges; parking was a hefty $22.50, and online ticket sales were discouragingly difficult.
The atmosphere was vibrant with music, from live bands to popular playlists, creating a festive mood similar to a smaller Coachella. I heard everything from Bachata to Taylor Swift, and even a lively cover of the O’Jays’ “Love Train,” all contributing to a cheerful environment.
Fairgoers were immersed in the experience, rarely focused on their phones aside from taking pictures. I noticed a heartwarming scene where a man in a MAGA cap stood beside a Muslim family, both enjoying the fair without any signs of discord as they gazed at Clydesdale horses.
Among my favorite attractions were the vegetables and livestock at the Farm & Gardens, and the art at the Flower & Garden Pavilion. The contrast of a lowrider show next to the NHRA Motorsports Museum was striking.
One highlight was the “America’s Great Outdoors” area. Volunteers engaged kids in activities like log sawing and gold panning, creating a memorable exploration of outdoor life. This area reminded me of what Knott’s Berry Farm used to be, offering hands-on experiences for families.
Although I rushed back to Orange County after just an hour and a half, missing some exhibits, I relished every moment at the fair. The experience of celebrating community and enjoying tradition at the L.A. County Fair was a beautiful escape, where the challenges of the world faded away for a while.
