Fable Reboot Delayed to 2026, First Look at Gameplay Revealed

REDMOND, Wash. — Microsoft has announced that the highly anticipated reboot of the Fable franchise will be delayed from its initial 2025 release window to 2026. The announcement came during the latest episode of the official Xbox podcast, where Craig Duncan, head of Xbox Game Studios, provided an update on the game’s progress and showcased 50 seconds of pre-alpha gameplay.
“We’re really excited about Fable’s progress and where Playground are. We previously announced a date of 2025, but we are going to give it more time,” Duncan said. “It’s going to ship in 2026 now. While I know that’s not maybe the news people want to hear, I assure you it’s definitely worth the wait.”
Playground Games, known for the successful Forza Horizon series, is leading the development of the new Fable game, marking the first mainline entry since 2010’s Fable 3. Duncan expressed his confidence in the studio, highlighting their legacy and the quality of visuals expected from their work.
“Just think of the visuals you expect from Playground games plus amazing gameplay, British humor, and Playground’s version of Albion,” he continued. “The most beautifully realized version of Albion you’ve ever seen is coming. I’m really excited about our plans and the future of Fable.”
The brief gameplay footage included scenes of combat featuring a one-handed sword, a two-handed hammer, and magical fireball abilities, as well as environmental exploration, including a character riding a horse through a fantastical forest. Duncan emphasized his hands-on experience with various elements of the game, confirming its playability and excitement.
“I played some aspects that are city-based… I’ve played some of the quests, some of the combat, and a boss battle. It felt amazing, and I had a great time,” Duncan said. “Everything you’re seeing here is very playable.”
The project was initially revealed in 2020 as a ‘new beginning’ for the Fable series, with numerous updates following, culminating in gameplay teasers at the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2024. With the recent news of the delay, the community’s anticipation remains high, combined with hopes for more substantial content to be revealed in the upcoming Xbox events.
