S.W.A.T. Faces Uncertain Future After Cancellation Announcement

LOS ANGELES, CA — The future of CBS‘s drama series S.W.A.T. is in limbo following its cancellation announcement in March 2025. The show, which focuses on the LAPD’s elite 20-Squad task force, has experienced a turbulent journey since its inception in 2017, including multiple cancellations and renewals.
S.W.A.T. originally aired its sixth season in 2023 but was abruptly canceled before being revived days later for a seventh season due to a passionate fan campaign. In May 2024, CBS renewed the series for an eighth season, which premiered last October and is set to conclude on May 16, 2025. However, no official renewal for a ninth season has been announced.
Showrunner Andrew Dettman expressed disappointment in the cancellation, stating, “It’s heartbreaking news, primarily because it’s been such an immense pleasure working with this cast and crew to put out a show that we’ve always been proud of.” Dettman and the team remain hopeful, given the show’s history of revival.
While CBS has not provided an official reason for this latest cancellation, executive producer Bruce Heller speculated in January 2025 about potential “corporate change” at CBS and its parent company, Paramount. “I don’t know what the plans are. It could be much different than years past,” Heller said.
Fans may remember a successful campaign led by S.W.A.T. star Shemar Moore that helped save the show in the past. Moore shared, “We’re really proud of the legacy of that show,” indicating that he and others are not yet ready to give up the fight for the series’ future.
The eighth season finale will feature two back-to-back episodes, including a plot that unfolds as the SWAT team tackles a violent crew holding Los Angeles hostage. As the series prepares for its finale, fans are left wondering if they will see more stories from this beloved cast.
