WASHINGTON, D.C. — Recent social media posts inaccurately claim that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), established by President Donald Trump, has terminated annual payments of $2.6 million to former President Barack Obama for ‘royalties associated with Obamacare.’

The misleading claim gained traction on platforms like Facebook after being circulated by several accounts, including one called America’s Last Line Of Defense (ALLOD). The post alleges that Obama has collected a total of $39 million since 2010, suggesting he is benefitting financially from the Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as Obamacare.

However, this assertion is unfounded. There is no evidence that DOGE has halted any payments related to the Affordable Care Act, nor that Obama was ever receiving such payments. Instead, former presidents, including Obama, receive a pension from the federal government, amounting to approximately $10.5 million since leaving office.

ALLOD, known for publishing satirical and fabricated stories, has clearly marked its content as fictional. In a disclaimer on its website, ALLOD states, “Everything on this website is fiction. It is not a lie and it is not fake news because it is not real.” The image associated with the false claim bore a stamp indicating its satirical nature, yet many readers did not recognize this.

No verifiable data supports the idea that the Trump administration implemented payments to Obama for Obamacare royalties, and the rumors appear to stem from a satirical context which was misinterpreted by social media users.

Despite the lack of legitimacy surrounding these claims, the posts have already garnered extensive engagement, with one noted post receiving over 2,600 reactions and being shared more than 3,500 times.

Through a broader lens, the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to slash federal spending through DOGE have triggered many discussions on fiscal policies and their implications, particularly in social services.

Fact-checking organizations have been diligent in combating misinformation like this. The prevalence of satirical material misinterpreted as reality poses a challenge for informed public discourse, especially on platforms rife with unchecked claims. Readers are encouraged to seek reliable news sources for accurate reporting.
