NEWARK, N.J. — In a striking revelation, Joe Rogan, the influential podcaster and MMA commentator, raised eyebrows once again with his claims about a turbulent childhood shaped by a violent father. Rogan, 57, recently recalled his experiences with his father, Joseph Sr., described as ‘crazy’ and ‘psychotic,’ during an appearance on his podcast.

Rogan stated, ‘My dad would have turned me into a f***ing psychopath,’ emphasizing the chaotic environment of his youth, which included witnessing aggressive confrontations at bars. These comments resurfaced after Joseph Sr.’s attorneys sent Rogan a letter in 2022, warning him against making defamatory statements. Following that, Rogan’s allegations have continued to stir controversy within his family.

Rosa Rogan Lunelli, 46, Rogan’s half-sister, expressed her strong dissent against his claims during an interview with the Daily Mail. ‘My family adamantly denies those claims. There has been no contact on Joe’s part with wanting to meet our father nor us,’ she stated, adding that she has never met her famous sibling.

Rosa’s resentment is palpable as she stands by her father, who now in his 80s remains a retired police officer. She recalled the pride she felt when Rogan interviewed former President Donald Trump ahead of the election, remarking, ‘Joe has the ability to shape people’s thoughts… it was something that was never done before.’

Rogan often reflects on his past, revealing a life marked by upheaval. Born in 1967, he moved from Newark to San Francisco after his parents’ divorce at age five. He described his childhood in Haight-Ashbury— a neighborhood known for its counterculture— as an intriguing transition, stating, ‘All of a sudden I’m living with this hippie guy… around a bunch of gay people.’

After relocating again to Newton, Massachusetts, as a teenager, Rogan struggled socially before taking up karate. ‘Martial arts gave me not just confidence, but also a different perspective of myself,’ he recalled. This newfound confidence ultimately led him to a career in entertainment, initially as a stand-up comedian and later as a commentator for the UFC.

In 2002, Rogan’s commentary style caught the attention of UFC executive Dana White, who described how Rogan’s deep understanding of the sport helped fans grasp the nuances of fights. ‘He would walk you through what was happening literally before it would happen,’ White praised. Rogan’s significant impact on MMA is well-acknowledged, with many attributing part of the sport’s growth to his dynamic commentary.

Rogan’s career trajectory took another leap with the launch of his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, in 2009. It rapidly became a cultural phenomenon, culminating in a $200 million deal with Spotify in 2020. The show features diverse guests, including celebrities, scientists, and politicians, drawing considerable attention and sometimes controversy, particularly regarding discussions on politics and public health.

While his podcast has solidified his status as a media titan with millions of followers, it has also positioned him as a polarizing figure. Rogan’s interviews with Trump and other controversial figures have sparked debates about his influence and political leanings. Having shifted from once supporting more liberal candidates like Bernie Sanders to endorsing Trump, his political journey mirrors the shifting dynamics of American media and public opinion.

Despite his success, Rogan’s familial estrangement remains a poignant element of his narrative. Joseph Sr. expressed a desire to reconnect, stating in 2022, ‘I would like to see him,’ emphasizing concerns of being misunderstood in the ongoing family conflict. As the Rogans navigate their fraught relationship against the backdrop of public fame, the complexities of family legacies and personal histories continue to unfold.
