Fashion Meets History at Palais des Papes in Avignon

Avignon, France — The gothic Palais des Papes witnessed a historic fashion show, marking the first of its kind in the palace’s 700-year history. Renowned designer Nicolas Ghesquière showcased his latest Louis Vuitton collection in the central courtyard, echoing the pageantry of the papacy.
The venue, rich in history, was filled with 400 guests, including celebrities such as Brigitte Macron, Cate Blanchett, and Pharrell Williams. This high-profile event followed closely on the heels of the recent papal conclave, adding a dramatic backdrop to the collection.
Ghesquière’s inspiration blended Arthurian legend with modern stage aesthetics, as seen with the Haim sisters, who were present at the show. He remarked, “There is something medieval, for sure, but something futuristic too. This is armor, but for now.” His choice reflects a deep connection to the venue, which he frequented during summer theatre festivals.
The designer emphasized that fashion is akin to performance, stating, “Dressing is a performance that we are all part of.” His long tenure at Louis Vuitton, spanning over a decade, has demonstrated an acute sense of contemporary cultural trends.
Louis Vuitton, as part of the LVMH group, reported $88 billion in revenue last year. Hosting such a lavish event in a UNESCO-listed site showcases the brand’s influence in the luxury market. Ghesquière remarked on the significance of this collaboration and the idea of belief associated with the papal venue.
The collection featured short tunic dresses paired with slouchy boots, merging knightly heraldry with a festival vibe reminiscent of Glastonbury. Evening looks included eye-catching metallic gowns adorned with bishop sleeves, reflecting styles of both Joan of Arc and Janis Joplin. Ghesquière noted, “My job is to stimulate the eye. If you want to create a classic, first you have to make something new.”
Looking ahead, Ghesquière expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming Paris Fashion Week and the excitement it brings. “October will be really exciting. Fashion is exploding. Fashion should always be about change,” he stated, underscoring his commitment to evolving the industry.
